Magic, Mystery, a little Whisky, and a Cat

Novel Magic: Some Whisper, Some Shout by K.K. Weil

Mystery, suspense, and a hint of romance along with the serious issue of mental illness make K.K. Weil’s latest release more than just a good read.  Walk a mile in Jolie’s shoes in Some Whisper, Some Shout.

Thanks so much for having me today, Sorchia! I’m very excited to share my new release, Some Whisper, Some Shout, with you. Here’s an excerpt from the book. To give it a little context, my narrator, Jolie, is a woman whose family has struggled with mental illness. She’s afraid it will be passed to her and as a result, she tries to maintain a very routine, grounded life. But when she meets a mysterious stranger, she can’t help being taken in by him, even if it means letting go of some of her routines.

Some Whisper, Some Shout Excerpt:

I scanned the room. “Your sax and your bag. Where are they?” This was the first time I’d seen him without them.

“Right outside,” he pointed. “In my car.”

Before we reached the door, I could have sworn I saw a tall, dark shadow glide past it. When Reed opened the door for me, no one was there.

“Did you see that?” I asked without thinking.

“No, what?”

“I think someone was out here.”

He looked in both directions. “I don’t see anyone. Must have been your imagination.”

I flinched at his words, but he couldn’t know how they’d bother me. I shook away the thought.

He motioned to his navy SUV. “I have to move it soon. Alternate side.” There were no other cars on the block.

Except for one. A black two-door sedan.

A door slammed on the car. Tinted windows prevented me from seeing inside, but my heart raced as it pulled out of its spot and flew down the block. I turned to Reed to see if he thought it was strange that someone would hang out on this desolate street after midnight, and then speed away like a bat out of hell. He just took my hand and walked, as if nothing were out of the ordinary.

I tried to be subtle as I scratched my neck. I tried not to let him hear my quick, clipped breathing.

I did not imagine someone watching me in that store. I did not fabricate a car zooming away as if they were caught spying on me.

It was not all in my mind.

It couldn’t be.
