Help Design a Book Cover PLUS Prism and Rita Award Winning Books

I need your help designing my next book cover, but first read about the big doin’s in Sorchia’s Universe this past week.

This Week’s Breaking News

  • Zoraida Grey and the Family Stones won a third place Prism Award from Romance Writers of America’s Fantasy, Futuristic, and Paranormal chapter. While I would have loved  1st or 2nd place, Zoraida was in elite company. The 1st place winner in my category took Best of the Best and the 2nd place winner got a RITA .

  • See all the Prism winners and RITA winners  and add them to your reading list.
  • Zoraida Grey and the Voodoo Queen is with an editor right now. Voodoo, pirates, hurricanes, earthquakes, romance, whisky, and at least one vampire.
  • I’m off to a great start on Zoraida Grey and the Pictish Runes which will be the last book in the Zoraida Grey series. What do you think about dragons? Yeah, well, me too.

Upcoming Events

  • Witchling: A Zoraida Grey Anthology— Near Halloween (Subscribers to Sorchia’s Universe get this for free.)
  • Zoraida Grey and the Family Stones is entered in a couple more contests which end in December.
  • Zoraida Grey and the Voodoo Queen—probably released near the end of 2017.
  • Zoraida Grey and the Pictish Runes—Sometime in Spring 2018.
  • After that, I have a nice murder in mind. Probably in book form.

Here’s where I need your help!

Covers are a bit of a sticky wicket with me—I have opinions on what makes a good cover but not everybody sees it my way. For one thing, I like my covers to be different–not the same old stereotypical romance covers. For another, I think they should be fairly clean and minimal. Not a lot of busy-ness. Historically, I have not always gotten what I want which sometimes is a good thing.

Tell me—Am I nuts?

Take a quick survey—Honestly, it won’t take more than 2 minutes–and let me know if I am just too picky. If you don’t want to take the survey, just leave your advice in a comment. What kind of cover makes you drop your latte and fork over your lunch money for a book?

Sorchia’s Book Cover Survey

I’ll post the results later this month. When it comes time for me to tell the artist what I want, I’ll have the weight of your advice to use to make the next Zoraida cover something special.

Novel Magic: Giving Books a New Life with Juli D.Revezzo

Audiobooks provide the same escape you found when your mom read stories out loud to you when you were a kid.  Remember how nice it was to close your eyes and fall into a story? These days you can listen to your favorite books via an audiobook service while you drive, make supper, or lounge on the couch with a glass of wine.

Sorchia’s Universe is happy to present author Juli D.Revezzo, author of Lady of the Tarot. She’s going to tell you  about her experiences mining this method of publishing and a bit about her new book as well.

Giving Books New Life by Juli D.Revezzo

Like most booklovers, I’m always happy to devour a book whenever I can. I love my ebook reader, and have mountains of paperbacks and hardcovers in my collection as well. But every once in a while, those just aren’t the most convenient format for reading. I’ve been known to splurge on books on tape, but alas, those aren’t even convenient these days. glares at MP3 format.

Either way, audio has long been a viable backup for this bookworm. As an author, I always thought it would be cool if only I could have some of my books translated into audiobook. Alas, that’s a dream…or was, until a friend of mine discovered a service that allows authors the opportunity to fulfil this desire. She’d had several books made into audiobook (and I’d enjoyed listening to them. So when I released my latest gothic PNR novel, LADY OF THE TAROT, I thought I’d take the plunge and signed up for an account at ACX. The sheer number of narrator samples was fun to poke through, hearing all the different accents and timbres voicing various characters, it was a nice way to procrastinate working…er, I mean, it was an enjoyable hunt.

However, I had a specific challenge with LADY OF THE TAROT. Aside from the themes in the story and the paranormal romantic elements which dictated a need for a lover of that kind of thing, several of my characters are French and do tend to throw around French terminology, here and there. I thought it might be easier on me, my narrator, and my readers/listeners if the narrator could handle Emilie and company’s French. That, like I said, turned into a bigger challenge than I thought.

Fast forward past some time here, and in the end, the narrator I chose, Christina Marie Morris, was a find in herself.

And let me tell you, you think it’s cool to hear a best seller, or one of your favorite books, in your earbuds? Listening to your own is a totally different experience. In short, what a thrill it was to hear my heroine Emilie come to life! Ms. Morris’ not only handled the foreign language terminology well, as I listened to the chapters she sent me, I began to think of, and anticipate, hearing Emilie in Ms. Morris’ voice.   I finally saw what my friend meant about a narrator giving another dimension of life to the character. As a listener also, that was a joy. Indeed, I believe it’s made me appreciate audiobooks all the more. I encourage you as readers to give them a try, if you have not. And authors, you too! I believe you’ll love the result. I did!

Before I go, let me share with the synopsis of LADY OF THE TAROT:
What the cards foretell may be real, after all

1793: Having escaped the Reign of Terror, Emilie Maigny took refuge in England, trying to come to grips with the life and loss she left behind. When her brother, Sinjon, returns, a terrifying evil swoops down upon her. Nightmares plague her now, providing strange clues…but to what?

Scottish-born Linton Morrison spent his entire life in luxury, whiling away the hours in intense study of the tarot and the cards’ hidden meanings, but until he met the lovely Emilie Maigny, he would never have guessed how important his study might be – to his life and Emilie’s survival when terrible evil strikes.

A Cypher is all Emilie needs, but what is it? Is Linton the key? He may charm her heart – and he may be her only salvation.

Should you like to check the LADY OF THE TAROT audiobook out for yourself, you can find it at Audible, Itunes, or Amazon (where you can also hear the sample of LADY OF THE TAROT.) See links below.

(And if you prefer plain ole print, it’s available in Kindle and paperback as well).

News–A Guest Post–and a Request for Happy Thoughts

Greetings and Felicitations!!

I have had the mother of all summer colds which has spiraled into one of those dark nights of the soul. Never fear–I’m treating it with liberal doses of Scotch. I should be completely cured in a matter of days. From my bed of pain, I’ve managed to write a guest post on an intriguing site called Compelling Beasts.

Despite the plague, I’ve got a bit of exciting news.

First, Zoraida Grey and the Family Stones is a finalist for a Prism Award presented by FF&P a chapter of Romance Writers of America. I’m one of three finalists and am so thrilled to be mentioned along with these talented writers. Here is the complete list of finalists–every one of these books should be on the summer reading list! The winner will be announced at the RWA convention in Orlando, Florida, Friday, July 28 at 7 pm EST, Hold a happy thought around that time.

Second--and this is huge–Zoraida Grey and the Voodoo Queen is one step closer to publication. My editor is looking over the synopsis right now. I hope to have really good news in a couple of weeks. As all my writer friends know, once the publisher accepts a story, the work really begins with edits, revisions, cover details, and innumerable little things that have to happen before launch day. Still–I’m so happy to be standing at the edge of this cliff. This book took longer to write than it should have and I’m determined the last book in the series will not be delayed.

Last but not least, I’m guesting at a lovely place called Compelling Beasts BlogMale Witches: Boys of the Hood.

Check it out for  an excerpt from Zoraida Grey and the Family Stones.

If you have any sure-fire cures for colds/allergies/plague, post a comment.

Join me next week for another guest post at another fantastic site.

Novel Magic: A Dragon’s Treasure by Beverly Ovalle

If you don’t know by now, the most wonderful creatures populate Sorchia’s Universe. Our creature of the week is the star of Author Beverly Ovalle’s newest book, A Dragon’s Treasure. Be sure to enter Beverly’s contest for a Kindle Fire!!! Here’s Beverly to tell you about her addiction to dragons and her new book.

Here be Dragons!

I’ve always been fascinated with dragons, lizards and dinosaurs. Add in my addiction to romance and the eventual coming out of Paranormal Romance and I found my niche! I’m a firm believer that dragons had to be real once upon a time. Maybe they aren’t what they used to be, but they are still around. Who can say for sure that dragons didn’t exist?

My scale babies, Shui and Schwai, were Chinese Water Dragons. Shui would greet me at the door, his head peeking out just as I came home. I know how affectionate my dragons were (and how sharp their teeth were!) and took what I knew of them, how they lived, played, how they felt to the touch, and extrapolated from there!

Combining my interests has me churning out (slowly but still…) books that have subjects that fascinate me. I hope they catch your interest as well.

A little taste:

She would make a magnificent dragon. Wrapped in all the gold he could give her, her flesh peeking from beneath. She was his.

He looked over at Ellen, lifting a brow in inquiry.

“Don’t mess with my cousin.”

He grinned. “I’m not. She’s my mate.” Ellen’s eyes widened while Breccan and Maxwell snickered. His eyes wandered down the hall she’d flounced out. She might have meant to look fierce, but her bouncy blonde hair and petite size negated that. Kai wanted nothing more than to follow her and claim her. Her scent was even stronger in the enclosed space than wafting on the breeze. He’d bet she wore a dragon’s mark somewhere on her luscious body. He couldn’t wait to hunt for it.

“Holy cow! Are you sure?” Ellen grinned. “That’s great!”

Breccan chimed in. “By her reaction, I’d say not so great.” He sported a big grin on his face. “Looks like Kai will have a battle on his hands.”

Maxwell’s sly twist of his lips showed he was enjoying the situation too.

Kai glared at them. Damn wolves. They were a pain. He could see the colors in the kitchen change as his dragon attempted to get out. A little barbeque wolf was a tasty snack. The rumble of agreement by his dragon made him smirk. He couldn’t hurt those two, no matter how aggravating they were. Breccan was the only reason Ellen didn’t spend her days wrapped in fear any more. His dragon reluctantly settled down.

Author Bio:

Beverly Ovalle has been obsessed with dragons and romance since she was a young girl, collecting dragon books and reading everything she could find on them even down to the care of real life dragons. An avid fan of all romance, Beverly’s goal is to share her love of the written word and write the hot and erotic romances that she enjoys. She writes what she loves to read and it was only a matter of time before her obsessions crept into her writing for her to share. She hopes you enjoy her tales as much as she loves writing them.

A Navy Veteran, Beverly has traveled around the world and the United States enabling her to bring her settings to life, meeting and marrying her husband of twenty eight years along the way for her own romance. Reading romances since the fourth grade she’s followed as the genre changed and spread into the vast cornucopia of romance offered today.
