by Tasarla Romaney

Hey Hey l’m glad to be back on Novel Magic. This time I’m going to talk about Warrior Queen – book 2 of my Night of the Gryphon series. Last time I talked about how Ovezara was my favorite villain to write. (See Tasarla’s last post here.)This time I thought I’d share why I think writing fantasy is ‘magic.’

The only limitation is my imagination. If I can picture it then I can write it ?.  And my books have lots of my imagination. For example…

Crenshaw glanced around. A small furry ball limped toward them.”

A friend of yours? Or is it going to eat me?”

“Neither. Frighurs are nasty things but would not dare attack shade.”

But they soon learn that Japere  – the shade is wrong – this happens a lot 🙂

The shade spun around his black sword swiping through the air and Crenshaw fell to the ground. It rained blue fur down as a ball fell beside him. Now close to the frighur, he could see it was split in half by a mouth lined with rows of what appeared to be very sharp teeth.

“The frighurs dare to attack a shade?” Rysa offered a hand to Crenshaw.

“Things are strange everywhere. Give him one of your daggers.” The shade instructed. “If the king and you live through this, you can take him back.”

“I’d like better odds,” Rysa whispered.

Crenshaw’s heart skipped several beats as he took one of Rysa’s knives. Why would a bunch of rolling hair balls frighten a warrior of the shadow lands? He watched as the shade whirled his sword. And how could they defeat a shade?

So what is a frighur???

It’s a cute rolling ball of fur – like this.

That has a smile like this…

Another ‘thing’ that lived in my imagination (I mean doesn’t everyone think of things like this?) are the nomad ghouls that were sort of based on this guy.

Here’s a brief peek at them.

“Humans are fragile and we have very sensitive egos.” Crenshaw wiggled in Cyloc’s grip.

“I don’t know what that means.” Cyloc replied and tightened his hold on Crenshaw’s ankle. “You are the first human I have encountered.”

“My luck,” Crenshaw whispered. “What are the chances of you putting me down and allowing me to walk?”

“No. You will escape.”

Crenshaw scanned his surroundings. Nothing. Flat parched clay as far as the eye could see in all directions. “Where would I go?”

“Small rodents always find a place to hide.”

“We have to work something out. Dangling over your shoulder by one ankle isn’t the best way to transport me. All the blood is rushing to my head and my left leg is now two inches longer than the right. I’m going to pass out.”

Cyloc paused. “You try to trick me?”

“As I’ve said there is nowhere for me to run. I know you may find this hard to believe but I’m not all that excited about going to Darivic’s palace.”

“You will not make a fool out of me?”

“Nope.” Crenshaw sighed in relief as Cyloc lowered him to the ground. The gray horizon spun as the blood flooding his brain returned to the rest of his body. Carefully, he tried to step on the ankle Cyloc had gripped him by. Pain pulsed through his leg, but nothing felt broken or strained. “How far are we going?”

“You haven’t taken a step and yet complain.” Cyloc shook his head.
